Scribes

Jesus Christ our glorious Lord and Savior had much to say about the scribes and Pharisees as recorded for us by the Holy Spirit through His prophet Matthew.  We will look at what Jesus said about these scribes and then see that these are His same pronouncements against the scribes of our day.  This will be based upon my previous post and additional information garnered from the sources that I studied for the purpose of exposing the lie foisted upon the visible church by the enemy of our souls and his henchmen.  I will post my sources at the end of this post.

(13)  But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.  (14)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.  (15)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves…. (23)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.  (24)  Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.  (25)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.  (26)  Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.  (27)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.  (28)  Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.  (29)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous, (30) And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.  (31)  Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.  (32)  Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.  (33)  Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?  (34)  Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: (35) That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.  Matthew 23:13-15 and 23-35

The scribes of Jesus day were just like the false scribes, or scholars, of today.  They prepared the Scriptures, but they had no faith in the veracity of those Scriptures because they were not men of faith, they didn’t believe in Lord God Almighty revealed in the Holy Scriptures nor in the revelation of His Son.  So when Jesus Christ came and ministered to His people the Jews, they were completely unprepared for Who He was and what He had come to do.  The scribes were experts in tradition but lightweights in the truth of the Scriptures and they misguided the people with false works and faulty doctrine.  They were children of darkness and damnation and their followers were just like them, but more so.  These false scribes despised the Messiah and led the Jews into their disavowal of their Savior, Jesus Christ.

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, (2) Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.  (3)  But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?  (4)  For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.  (5)  But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou might be profited by me; (6) And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.  (7)  Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, (8) This people draws nigh unto me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.  (9)  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.  Matthew 15:1-9

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.  Matthew 16:21

Today’s false scribes are also described by their crippling lack of faith both in God and in the truth of the Scriptures.  They start out on the false premise that the Bible is like any other ancient literature and not the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit which then vouchsafes the very Words of God, the inspired, inerrant, infallible, preserved Word of God to His children.  The greedy scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day were concerned with their own prosperity and prestige; present day scribes love the renown they gain by having their names attached to one of the many modern versions being proliferated abroad garnering huge cash flow into publishing houses, bookstores, etc.  These men are seen as scholars of renown but their reputations don’t make them faithful scribes preparing for our use the Scriptures.  Below are comparisons of their handling of the text of God’s Word through use of the corrupt manuscripts, codices Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, presented in two modern versions, with the true text of God’s Word given from the Received Text and given to us in English in the King James Version.  Please note how the meaning in these passages is twisted from the truth of the Scriptures, by the process of omission.  In the following examples the portion of the verses that have been eliminated are italicized.  These italicized portions have been eliminated from the NIV and NASB versions of the bible, but are to be found in the KJV.

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.  Luke 4:4

“Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy Word is truth.” John 17:17

And they crucified Him, and parted His garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.”  Matthew 27:53

As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before Thy face, which shall prepare Thy way before Thee.  Mark 1:2

And the Scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And He was numbered with the transgressors.  Mark 15:28

In these examples, it can be seen that the supernatural nature of the Word of God is attacked by what has been eliminated from the above verses in the NIV and the NASB.  These are just a few of the changes that are made to the Bible on the basis of the Revised text that came from Westcott and Hort.  These changes attack the Words of God, and attack the doctrines of the Scriptures.  The Received Text is different from the Revised Text in 5,604 places which involves 9,970 Greek words.  This is a total of 15.4 Greek words per page and results in 45.9 pages being different in the Critical Greek New Testament from the Textus Receptus.  Of those changes 1,952 are omissions, 467 are additions, and 3,185 were changes.  So looking at this information you can see how the modern versions can in no way be considered the infallible, inerrant, inspired, preserved Word of God, even those based upon the Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament which was a continuance of the Westcott-Hort Greek New Testament.  More to the point, those scribes who have followed the lead of Westcott and Hort in choosing the Alexandrian text over the Byzantine text have stated that we might never be able to know what God has said.  How can that inspire our confidence in the Word of God?  And the result, this uncertainty supports a multi-billion-dollar industry of providing newer and better translations of the Bible with the most up-to-date study guides for those who are anxious to “know” God’s Word.

Years ago a graduate student wrote his thesis on Textual Criticism and the research that he did for his thesis led him to dethrone, in agreement with others, the theories of Hort that have attacked the preeminence of the Received Text as the Greek New Testament from which the New Testament of the Bible is to be translated.  At the end of his book, The Identity of the New Testament Text, Wilbur N. Pickering came to the conclusion in agreement with Dean John Burgon that the Traditional Text is the Identity of the Greek New Testament that is the preserved, infallible, inerrant, inspired Word of God.

Thankfully there are scribes who are faithful scholars who encourage our hearts with the truth of His Word so that we can confidently hold fast the King James Version, as that English Version, that faithfully gives to us the Words of God from the original Autographs.  This is actually a fulfillment of the promise that Jesus Christ gave which He would give us scribes who would be His faithful servants.  May we be His faithful saints to know the truth, to study the truth about His Holy Word and to believe and obey His Holy Word handed down to us through the Received Text and faithfully translated for us in the KJV.

(34)  Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes:… Matthew 23:34

Lord Jesus Christ keep us from the deceit of the enemy and keep us holding fast to Your truth preserved for us through the Received Text and translated for us with great proficiency and faithfulness in the King James Version.  May we be faithful and true to You in all things.  Amen!

I posted an article on my blog on New Testament Textual Criticism. — It’s introductory in nature on a subject that can get very complicated, but you might find it helpful. I hope to follow it up soon with something on the King James Version.

      Hi Bob,
I have more to come on textual criticism. As always, and as my loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has taught me, the Word of God is the dividing line between the spurious and the true. Blessings in Christ Jesus, Amen!
