Deceiving Spirits

The spirit of Antichrist is leading the church headlong into apostasy as it embraces many different forms of heresy.  One particularly dangerous heresy is the false teaching of contemplative spirituality.  This false teaching is being taught without opposition in Bible Colleges, seminaries, theological institutions, and Christian universities throughout the country because Christian college accrediting associations are making it mandatory to teach spiritual formation for accreditation.  Contemplative spirituality, known as spiritual formation, is leading many people astray and opening them up to deceiving spirits.  These false spirits have led and will lead those who practice these spiritual disciplines into openly denying the truth about Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God Who came to take away our sins reconciling us to God our Father and giving us eternal life.  There are many testimonies of those who have practiced contemplative spirituality turning away from the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  2 By this you know the Spirit of God:  Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.  And this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.  4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.  5 They are of the world.  Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.  6 We are of God.  He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us.  By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.  1 John 4:1-6

Our standard for faith and practice must always be the Word of God, the Bible, and not the opinions or practices of fallen men deceived by the devil, believing damning doctrines and following godless deeds.  Contemplative spirituality endorses New Age occultic practices that open up the practitioners to demonic forces.  The techniques taught by contemplative leaders focuses on dangerous meditation that prepares an individual to be led astray by deceiving spirits.  The practice of emptying one’s mind to meet with God gives the devil free reign to appear as an angel of light and teach damnable doctrines.  The proponents of this deceptive practice have embraced universalism and have turned away from the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Know that these spiritual disciplines are also being taught to school age children through parachurch organizations.  The devil subtlety has brought this into the church through the goal of getting to know God better, but it leads the opposite way and makes a people ready for his Antichrist.  It is unconscionable that high profile leaders within the evangelical church are not rigorously warning their flocks and listeners about the dangers of spiritual formation.  In a video from the Truth Matters Conference, when John MacArthur is asked about contemplative spirituality he gives a very weak warning and completely disregards the spiritual deception that is inherent in this practice through opening oneself to deceiving spirits.  This is just like the devil, to minimize evil and danger, making it so it doesn’t seem so bad.  If we love Jesus Christ and our brethren we will do all that we can to warn them of this dangerous deception.

1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.  1 John 5:1

We must always repair to our Bibles for our edification and drawing nearer to Jesus Christ.  The only meditation that is acceptable to God is the meditation He requires, that we think about Him, His Word, His salvation, and our unworthiness.  Emptying our hearts and minds and opening ourselves up to the spiritual realm is only an invitation for Satan to send deceiving spirits our way to lead us astray.  My beloved brethren God our Father has given us all that we need to know Him through His Word, His Son and His indwelling Holy Spirit.  Those of you who know Him will know what I mean when I say that our fellowship with Him is very active, with our thoughts and desires directed and corrected by His Holy Spirit through the application of His Word to our hearts and our minds.  My beloved brethren, this is why we must saturate our hearts and minds with the glorious Word of God, so we can grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.  10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.  11 And this is the testimony:  that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  1 John 5:9-11

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship wit with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.  1 John 1:1-3

There has always been the danger of being led astray by demonic forces through occultic activities.  Our God thoroughly condemns such practices and exhorts us to hold to His way, not the world’s way which only leads to eternal damnation in fiery hell.  Please read the links below to learn more about this dangerous practice.  Become well informed so that you can warn others for their good and God’s glory.  Amen!

19 And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God?  Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?  20 To the law and to the testimony!  If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.  Isaiah 8:19-20

Lord Jesus Christ, keep us Your precious possession safe from the deceptions of the enemy.  May we by Your Spirit warn against this evil and reprove those who practice it.  They are only making themselves ready for the Antichrist who follow the false teaching of spiritual formation.  May we be faithful and true to You.  Amen!

  1. Thank you, Eliza, for your labor of love! I will read the Lighthouse Trails tracts.
    It is hard to listen to John MacArthur – I no longer trust Him to teach faithfully because of his light treatment of God’s Word.
    Lord bless and keep all who love the Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love!

    Here’s another one of JMac’s teachings that are controversial…

    In one of his sermons about Matthew 6:13 he has this to say: “The doxology is simply this; “For Thine is the kingdom, the power, the glory forever, Amen.” That’s a doxology. You just say it, you just think it, you just offer it to God, you don’t dissect it. AND BY THE WAY, THERE’S MANUSCRIPT EVIDENCE THAT JESUS DIDN’T EVEN SAY THIS, THAT’S WHY IT’S NOT INCLUDED IN SOME OF YOUR VERSIONS OF THE BIBLE. WE DON’T KNOW WHETHER HE SAID IT OR NOT. Some manuscripts have it, some don’t.“ {Source –}

    It’s frightening to think that a so called pastor would tell his congregation not to dissect a verse, he seems to be implying that you mindlessly repeat this portion of the text with little to no thought added to what you’ve just said! To contemplate the kingdom, power and glory of the Almighty One is beyond breathtaking! Yet, Jmac says otherwise. DON’T think about it, just offer it up mindlessly, thoughtlessly. How shameful is that? And yet, many defend and follow this hireling.

    (Regarding the Doxology, there is massive evidence that the Lord Jesus Christ did say these words and they are to be included in the true Bible. – See the first part of this study of the so called “science” of textual criticism) {source –}

      I have been studying the whole textual criticism abomination and will be writing about it soon. Thank you for sharing this. May Christ richly bless us as we contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to His saints. Amen!
