God’s Good Word: Ephesians 5:1-10

As believers in Jesus Christ making up His beloved church God’s calls us to live in such a manner that honors Christ and enlivens the church with godly graces and temperaments.  Believers must never engage in any activity outside of the Holy Spirit’s enabling.

1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.  2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

Saints, the children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God and belief in the efficacy of His death upon the cross for the forgiveness of our sins and His resurrection from the dead for our justification, are called to live in a manner worthy of the calling of Christ.  We are to be imitators of God because we are His dear children, and we must walk in love in the same manner that Christ loved us, be willing to give up ourselves in the same way that Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself for us.  Paul, the apostle, is an excellent example of this genuine godly love for God and love for the brethren.

14 Now for the third time I am ready to come to you.  And I will not be burdensome to you; for I do not seek yours, but you.  For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but parent for the children.  15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.  2 Corinthians 12:14-15

We are exhorted by Paul to follow him as he followed Christ. Paul’s whole purpose in life was Christ and his God given goal was to serve the church for Christ’s glory.  We must follow Paul’s example as he followed Christ.

1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.  1 Corinthians 11:1

20 “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”  Galatians 2:20

21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.  22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell.  23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.  24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you.  25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.  Philippians 1:21-26

My beloved brethren, is this how we live?  Is this heart evident in the pastors, teachers, and elders of the visible church?  I am deeply sorrowful that much of what we see within the visible church matches the verses that follow.

3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.  5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

These are the works of the flesh and should never be named within the church of the living God.  Which makes the point, are those religious institutions which are advocating for homosexuality in any way the church of the living God?  How could that be?  God’s Word is completely clear, those who live in this way will not, cannot inherit the kingdom of God.  They are still citizens of the kingdom of darkness ruled over by the Satan, the enemy of our souls.

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived.  Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.  1 Corinthians 6:1-10

There are numerous heralds throughout the visible church advocating for homosexuals.  They are for them attending their churches, they are for them getting married, they are for them serving in the church and they are for them being leaders in the church.  This is an abomination!  These deceivers are heaping upon themselves the judgment and wrath of God Almighty.  This is just one obvious glaring example of the visible church doing those things that bring about the wrath of God.

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.  7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.  8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.  Ephesians 5:1-10

We are the children of God through faith in Christ and are commanded to walk as children of light.  Although when we were enemies of God we lived as unbelievers, we now have the Holy Spirit and are called to produce His fruit, which is seen in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.  Our inheritance is glorious and we must live as heirs of the kingdom of God.  Our focus must be to please God and do what is acceptable to Him.

9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.  11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshy lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.  1 Peter 2:9-12

13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”  17And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;  18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.  1 Peter 1:13-19

Heavenly Father, may we Your beloved children live for your glory walking by the power of the Holy Spirit in obedient faith in You.  May we know Your truth from Your Word to keep us from error and evil behavior.  We praise You and thank You for the glorious gift of Your Son.  Amen!
