God’s Good Word: Ephesians 1:13-23

As the beloved of God we must beloved children we must always keep in mind His blessings in our lives and His goal for us.  There are a number of passages that lay this out explicitly, here is one from Romans chapter eight.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.  Romans 8:28-29

How is this accomplished?  As we come to know the rich resources that our Heavenly Father has given to us we can with confidence grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and become conformed to His image.  This passage out of Ephesians chapter one gives us great doctrine for growing in Christ.

13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.  15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers:  17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.  22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.  Ephesians 1:13-23

God our Father enlightens our hearts and minds through the ministry of the Word of God by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Without the enlivening of His Word by His Spirit we are easily deceived.  This has led to the very untenable situation where much of what passes for the church is actually in opposition to Christ.  He is the head over all things to the church, and the church is His body, filled with Him.  What we see taking place today is a gross perversion of the church so that sound doctrine and sound teaching are being neglected, and instead worldly philosophy and worldly wisdom are being embraced.  Thus the visible church is not Christ’s body but a wicked substitute that has nothing at all whatsoever to do with the will of our heavenly Father.  Our God defines the work of the church for us in Ephesians chapter four.

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.  Ephesians 4:11-16

This, the legitimate ministry of God’s children, is not taking place within the visible church.  Instead false teaching abounds with all manner of ungodly wickedness.  As God’s called out children what must we do?  We must make it our daily exercise to read and study God’s Word for our edification.  We must avoid any and all false teachers.  We must compare everything that we read and hear with the holy standard of God’s truth the written Word of God Almighty, the Bible.  If we are not doing such then we are siding with the enemy of our souls.

This link that is posted is an audio message by Dr. Paul Elliot that lays out in a very clear and concise manner our need as Christ’s beloved brethren to know and grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ through our own daily feeding upon the Word of God for our spiritual nourishment and godly growth.  I pray this message blesses your hearts the way it encouraged mine.

17 Your therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To Him be the glory both now and forever.  Amen.  2 Peter 3:17-18

3 Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ…Ephesians 1:3

Lord Jesus Christ we are commanded to abstain from error and grow in the grace and knowledge of You.  Since You have provided for us all that is needed, may we with thankful hearts eagerly delve into the treasures of Your Word so we can know You better and be equipped to walk with You daily.  In Your Holy name, Jesus Christ, we pray.  Amen!
