During Christ’s sojourn upon this earth He continuously amazed all the people with His awesome authority expressed in word and deed.
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Matthew 7:28-29
32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus rebuked him saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” Luke 4:32-36
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” Mark 4:35-41
30 Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. 31 So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. Matthew 15:30-31
11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. 16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” Luke 7:11-16
The authority of Jesus Christ was on display for all to see. Crowds saw and marveled at what Jesus Christ said and did. However, this wasn’t true of all people of the land. The religious leaders not only questioned Jesus’s authority they also rejected it and ascribed Christ’s power as coming from the evil one.
23 Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave you this authority?” Matthew 21:23
22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of demons. Matthew 12:22-24
As we read about the Jewish religious leaders rejection of Jesus Christ recorded for us in the gospel of John, it becomes clearly evident that they rejected Jesus Christ and His authority, not because they loved God or the people, but because they did not belong to God the Father, but were instead the children of the devil. The very thing they accused Jesus Christ of being.
37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.” 39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God’s word; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” John 8:37-47
Just like when Jesus walked this earth, today’s religious leaders oppose and reject Him. How do we know this, because they reject His Holy Word, the Bible, the only God-breathed revelation of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
Beloved, be aware. The universal ecumenicalism that is spreading around the globe seeks to marginalize and persecute all Bible believing followers of Jesus Christ, stating that we are extremists who are divisive and against the unity they seek for the whole world. Be aware that much of the visible “Christian” church is working in concert with these wicked workers because, just like the Jewish leaders during Christ’s earthly ministry, they are not of God but are instead of the devil. Be aware that the corrupt governmental institute in this country, along with their education, media, and business cohorts, are implementing this same program for this nation. We will not escape the coming persecution because we live in America. Why do you think the leaders of this nation are so silent about the persecution of Christians being carried out by ISIL. This is not accidental neglect!
We must be vigilant to share the gospel and point any and all to Jesus Christ Who alone can save the sinner. We must do this knowing that the time is short, but that Jesus Christ, who has commanded that we preach His gospel and make obedient disciples of all people, is with us, and He has all authority in heaven and on earth. So while we await the return of our glorious Lord and Savior, looking forward to His imminent return for His church before He comes to judge this world in blazing glory, let us be busy doing His business for His honor and glory. Amen!
16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matthew 28:16-20
Lord Jesus Christ, may we Your genuine church, who have been called out by Your Spirit and saved through faith in Your gospel, may we share the truth in the power and authority that You have given to Your sons and daughters for Your glory and the salvation of sinners. Amen!
