God’s Good Word: Psalm 85

I remember listening to the radio a few years ago, it was a Christian call in program, I don’t remember which one, but I do remember that a caller made the following statement:  The psalms are about the Messiah.  We can learn a great deal about Jesus Christ from the Psalms as we read and study the prophetic Word concerning our glorious Lord and Savior.  I remembered and thought about this as I read Psalm 85.

8 I will hear what God the Lord will speak, For He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; But let them not turn back to folly.  9 Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land.  10 Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed.  11 Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.  12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good; and our land will yield its increase.  13 Righteousness will go before Him, and shall make His footsteps our pathway.  Psalm 85:8-13

I love the picture of mercy and truth coming together, and of righteousness and peace kissing; it gives me great hope for the salvation of my loved ones and those that I meet.  God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  Only in Jesus Christ have mercy, truth, righteousness and peace all come together for the benefit of repentant sinners according to God’s holy and glorious will.  He sent His Son Jesus Christ to be the propitiation for the sins of the whole world.  Praise God.  Jesus Christ, who is the truth, willingly shows mercy even to the foulest of sinners.

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.  John 14:6

14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.  15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.  16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.  1 Timothy 1:14-16

The truth is that all mankind is bound in sin and needs the mercy of the Savior Jesus Christ to deliver them from the bondage to sin, death and eternal damnation in fiery hell.  God, because of His great love with which He has loved us has sent His Son as the one who establishes peace between holy God and wicked sinners, granting them His righteousness as they repent of their sin and have faith that He died in their stead and rose again from the dead, so their sins are forgiven, they are reconciled to God and have an eternal home in heaven.

21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the  Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.  For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.  Romans 3:21-24

1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  Romans 5:1-2

The mercy, righteousness, truth, and love of our Savior, secures our peace with God and gives us peace in all circumstances as we follow the holy perfect example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who left us His example truthfully and faithfully preserved in the Bible for us to follow.

21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:  22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”, 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.  25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.  1 Peter 2:21-25

10 Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed.  11 Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.  Psalm 85:10-11
