Unassailable Doctrine

The doctrines of the bible are unassailable, despite what the “scholars” and liberal religionists would have us believe.  We must always go to the sure Word of God for the truth regarding what we believe.  We must never go to men for two reasons:  first and foremost they are fallen sinners and so of course will attempt to assail the truth of the Scriptures; second God the Holy Spirit defines His Word for us, not fallen man.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.  13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  1 Corinthians 3:12-14

So we have the principal here laid out for us by God through Paul that our understanding of the things of God must come from Him through His Word taught to us by His Holy Spirit.  Fallen man, who has no spiritual discernment, has no right to try to define or interpret the Scriptures to us, or explain our doctrines to us.  These are spiritually discerned and since they do not have the Holy Spirit they are incapable of believing or teaching the truth.

Lately, I have exhorted against a long-winded argument that states “hell is not taught in the Old Testament”.  I shared some of the many verses that contradicted this false assertion, but they were waved off with the statement that “scholars” have determined the word translated as hell is Gehenna or Sheol, and simply means the abode of the dead.  Don’t allow yourself to get tripped up by this method of argument that is condemned in the Scriptures.  As always, resort to the sure Word of God to state the truth.

14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.  15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  2 Timothy 2:14-15

So now, let us rightly divide the word of truth regarding the doctrine of hell and prove that this is an unassailable doctrine.

In the last verse of the last chapter of Isaiah, God gives us a description of hell that is not linked to the words Gehenna or Sheol.  I do this in order to give the biblical definition of those two words that are used in the Old Testament.  I include preceding verses to emphasize that God is here speaking about hell.

22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the Lord, “So shall your descendants and your name remain.  23 And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.  24 “And they shall go forth and look Upon the corpses of the men Who have transgressed against Me.  For their worm does not die, And their fire is not quenched.  They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”  Isaiah 66:22-24

From the above verses note that God’s children are present with Him in the new heavens and new earth.  Those who have transgressed against God are the ones being punished in hell.  How do I know that this verse is actually describing hell?  We can know this from going to the Bible and letting Scripture, God’s Word, interpret Scripture.  The Scripture I want to go to is found in the gospel of Mark.  I want to quote verses in which Jesus Christ, Who again is God, is speaking.

42 “For whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, I would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.  43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—44 where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’”  Mark 9:42-44

Here Jesus Christ is quoting that Scripture out of Isaiah and plainly says that verse speaks of hell.  Another question we need to ask is, “Why would Christ be using this hyperbole to represent drastic avoidance of sin if hell isn’t a real place?”  Hell is a real place and we must repent of our sin and put our faith in Jesus Christ who took the punishment we deserve, dying in our place and He rose again from the dead, because He is God and has the power to reconcile us to God the Father through faith and give us the gift of eternal life.

Now that this godly doctrine has been properly deduced from the Scriptures, what does the Old Testament say about hell?  What does the New Testament say about hell?  There is a passage out of Psalms that I want to share and then there are passages out of Revelation that are also instructive.

15 The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught.  16 The Lord is known by the judgment He executes; The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.  Meditation.  17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.  Psalm 9:15-17

Sinners are snared by their sin, it doesn’t matter what nation they come from, all those who despise God will be judged by God in hell.  Notice that God’s Word says that He is known by His judgments, and the final expression of His judgment is to cast sinners into hell.  God is love, but He is also a consuming fire.  Let us never forget these truths so that we will not presume upon the mercy and grace of God.

We can go to Revelation chapter twenty-one for a list of sins that ensnare sinners and bring them under God’s judgment so they are cast into hell.  This list may surprise many of you.

7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.  8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”  Revelation 21:7-8

So those who lie against our God because of their unbelief will find they are cast into the lake of fire for eternity.  The “scholars” that try to falsify the Word of God are bound for hell unless they repent.  Sinners have no right to the kingdom of God and of His Christ.  They are cast out of His kingdom and are judged by our righteous and holy God for eternity.  Praise God that He sent His Son to be the Savior of the world that we who believe are born into His kingdom and have been given the right through our gracious Savior to spend eternity with Him.  None who hate God will be involved in God’s loving righteous kingdom, have access to His holy city, as God has disclosed through His prophet Isaiah and His apostle John.

12 “ And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.  13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”  14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.  15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.  16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches.  I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”  17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!”  And let him who hears say, “Come!”  And let him who thirsts come.  Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.  Revelation 22:12-17

The warning ends with an entreaty for sinners to repent and believe the gospel.  It is freely given.  Any and all are called to repent and believe.  That should always be our message to sinners, repent and believe the gospel.  After the entreaty comes a final warning about tampering with the Word of God.  Take care and take heed that your efforts in this life are not wasted trying to annul or twist the Scripture, to the damnation of those who listen to you and your own soul.  You will be held accountable.  God will use His Word the Bible to judge you.

18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book:  If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in the book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.  Revelation 22:18-19

Love that word and thought: unassailable. Great example here of holding forth his word…

I did see your defense of scripture re. hell; you are sooooo right about truth and the natural man; one may as well try to describe the color blue to a blind man. (no offense to a blind man of course)

God’s word is good, very good. Good stuff Eliza; God bless ya

ColorStorm stole my comment! I was going to say I love that word unassailable. Great word, accurately describing the Word of a great God. It doesn’t matter how much these non believer rail against it, it doesn’t change even a little bit. Not one jot and tittle, in fact. The idea of people who dismiss it out of hand arguing theology….seems kind of, well, stupid to me. It would be like me getting into an argument about physics.

But, we all know the reason. If I can prove Hell is false, I can never go there. If I can prove God is a brute and tyrant, I can decline to worship such a being. If I can prove The Word is false, then I don’t have to obey it. The reasons for this kicking are obvious.

Finally, Eliza, I know you deflect praise to the power of the Holy Spirit, and you should. It’s not good to be proud of oneself. But…..Your friends can be proud of you and it not be sin. Your defense today in the face of some pretty concerted attacks was inspiring and solid. All I could really do was watch and read, and that may be a good thing LOL.

    Bless you as always, Sister

Amen! But let us also keep in mind that Scriptures are often taught with man’s intended meaning for the tickling of their ears; to make soft what should be hard, to make practice-able that which God would have us put away, etc. Scriptures answering to Scriptures, as well as context and audience, will ensure God’s intended meaning comes through.

God bless you, Eliza, in all that you do for His Kingdom, by His power and for His glory, amen~
