Good Things

God uses His Word to encourage our hearts with the blessings that we have through His Son Jesus Christ.  He tells us in Philemon that knowledge of the good things we have in Christ Jesus empowers us to share our faith effectively.

1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, 2 to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:  3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  4 I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, 5 hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, 6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.  Philemon 1-6

These blessings that we have through Christ Jesus are powerful, transforming us from sinner to saint so as His loving children we can serve our God and Father and share the wonderful gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ with sinners in need of His salvation.  I want to focus on the many blessings, or good things which we have in Christ Jesus, to encourage our hearts and embolden our loving witness to the salvation which is given to all who will repent of their sins and place their faith in Jesus Christ.  We can start in the Book of Hebrews to mine from God’s Word the many blessings which are ours in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.  Since the treasure trove of good things that we have because of Jesus is vast, it is best to look at our blessings one at a time.  This will be, Lord willing, the first of many posts about the magnificent pearls of spiritual blessings which are ours through Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.

The very first verses of Hebrews lay out for us Christ’s great work of redemption that He accomplished for us when He died in our place.  The rest of the first chapter declares He is God and so His work on our behalf is efficacious.  This must be the starting place for acknowledging the good things that we have through Jesus Christ, because without His propitious work we could never know and possess the glories of His provisions for us.

1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.  5 For to which of the angels did He ever say:  “You are My Son, today I have begotten You”?  And again “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”?  6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says:  “Let all the angels of God worship Him.”  7 And of the angels He says:  “Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire.”  8 But to the Son He says:  “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.  9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”  10 And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.  11 They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed.  But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.”  13 But to which of the angels has He ever said:  “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”?  14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?  Hebrews 1:1-14

Jesus Christ, God the Son of God, purged our sins.  He accomplished the work the Father sent Him into the world to do on our behalf, because of God’s great mercy and kindness towards us.  This, my beloved brethren, is the love of God.  Out of His great benevolence He hears and answers our prayers for so many petty things, but the great proof of His amazing love toward us is that He sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  This love drives us to love one another.

9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.  10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and set His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  1 John 4:9-11

Our dire circumstances of being helpless sinners who have transgressed God’s holy commandments and therefore under His just wrath, He has remedied by sending His Son to die in our stead, taking the punishment which we deserve, shedding His precious blood, purging our sins and reconciling us to God.

6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.  7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die, yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.  8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.  10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God though the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.  Romans 5:6-10

The phrase, He purged our sins, is so rich and deep with the majestic mercy and love of God shown to sinners, reveals this wonderful blessing that belongs to us who have repented of our sins and placed our faith in Jesus Christ.  Praise God for His lavish love poured out upon us through His Son Jesus Christ!

There are many more precious gems of God’s blessings bestowed upon us through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.  May we experience and savor the great good things that are ours through Jesus Christ so we may gratefully serve God our Savior and minister the gospel of salvation to the lost.  Praise God for the good things we have through Christ Jesus!

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.  7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.  Ephesians 1:3-10
