The Nature of Sin

Sin is the outward expression of the hostility reserved for God that resides in breasts of all mankind.  Sin is manifested in transgressing God’s Holy Laws and in silencing the echo of the image of God handed down to humanity by harming others.  God’s Word, the Bible, teaches us about the universal nature of this enmity in Romans chapter three.

9 What then?  Are we better than they?  Not at all.  For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.  10 As it is written:  “There is none righteous, no not one; 11 There is none who seeks after God.  12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”  13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”, “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”  15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.”  18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”  Romans 3:9-18

This bitter destruction has its revelation in the appearance of Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry and the reception given to Him by those who were His.  There is great pathos is that verse out of John chapter one describing the reception given to Him by the Jews.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.  11 He came to His own, and His owns did not receive Him.  John 1:10-11

If we want to really understand the nature of sin and the evil hatred towards God demonstrated by corporate unbelief, then I believe that God has revealed the enmity of wickedness for us in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ recorded by Matthew in His gospel.  Just days before this brutal rejection of their Messiah, the Jews had been extolling Him as the Son of David.

8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.  9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David!  ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!”  10 And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?”  11 So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.” Matthew 21:8-11

After Judas betrayed Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior, the chief priests and elders of the people sent a great multitude with clubs and swords to arrest Jesus Christ who was betrayed to them by Judas with a kiss.  A mock trial was conducted and Jesus was falsely accused.  However, it was when Jesus Christ answered in the affirmative that He is the Son of God that the high priest and those with him condemned Jesus to death.  They then proceeded to abuse and blaspheme Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, before handing Him over to the authorities so that He could be put to death.  (Matthew 26:1-75)

It is at this point that I would like to proceed with the details recorded for us by Matthew regarding Christ’s rejection by the Jews and His crucifixion.

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor.  And the governor asked Him, saying “Are You King of the Jews?”  Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.”  12 And while He was being accused by the chief priest and elders, He answered nothing.  13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You hear how many things they testify against You?”  14 But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.  15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.  16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.  17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you?  Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”  18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.  19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”  20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.  21 The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”  They said, “Barabbas!”  22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”  They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”  23 Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?”  But the cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”  24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person.  You see to it.”  25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”  26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.  Matthew 27:11-26

The Jewish religious leaders whipped up the unbelieving multitude into a frenzied rejection and renouncing of their God and Savior and demanded that an evildoer be released to them instead.  Despite His exact fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, despite His numerous miracles, despite His obedience to God the Father and sinless perfection, despite His love and compassion for these sinners, despite His sublime teaching and faithful preaching of the kingdom of God, the unbelieving Jews could only do what their sin nature demanded and that was to reject and kill their Messiah.  This, my beloved brethren, is the stark revelation of the perversity, wickedness, and depravity of sin that resides within us because of our sinful human nature.  This historical presentation of the facts of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is a grave warning about the desperate duplicity of the human religion that comes forth from the sin nature.  We are witnesses to this same sort of evil, also within the leadership of the visible evangelical “Christian” church today.  This is why it is so necessary for us not to follow any man or woman, and why we must always beware of the duplicity of the leadership that pretends to be followers of Jesus Christ our glorious Lord and Savior.

You should know and be warned that those who you consider to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ within the visible evangelical church are anything but.  There is an ecumenical movement throughout the evangelical church that seeks to unify Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox.  The leadership that so many follow is deeply involved in this movement.  Many are aligned with a man by the name of Dr. Thomas Schirrmacher who is the chair of the Theological Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance and an Ambassador for Human Rights.  Thomas Schirrmacher is very ecumenical and has great influence throughout the visible church.  He says that he speaks for about 600 million Christians and believes and teaches that Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox can find common ground through agreeing that evangelization is a divine right.    He is the president of the Martin Bucer Seminary which has a study center in Brazil.  Thomas Schirrmacher will be speaking at the Fiel Ministries 2015 conference in Brazil.  Paul Washer of Heart Cry Missionary Society preached at a number of Fiel Ministry meetings in Brazil in 2012 and from that experience decided to partner with Martin Bucer Seminary in Brazil to train ministers of the gospel.  It should be noted that many evangelical organizations have partnered with Fiel Ministries in Brazil sending pastors and leaders there to be trained.  The statement of faith for this ministry has been written by The Gospel Coalition co-founders D. A. Carson and Tim Keller.  I exposed Keller as a heretic in a recent post, Profane Fire:

Other ministries that are partnering with Fiel Ministries besides the Gospel Coalition are Grace to You, 9 Marks Ministries, Christian Communicators Worldwide, Heart Cry, Desiring God, Ligonier Ministries, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  As those who are called by God to be His children through faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we need to be aware of the insidious nature of the spread of ecumenism that is infecting the visible church and preparing it for the adulterous one world religious system that is repugnant to God and another display of the enmity of unredeemed humanity towards our glorious God and Savior.   These extra-biblical “Christian” organizations are Trojan horses that let the enemy of our souls have influence within the Body of Christ and wound the precious and beloved children of God.  The true church of Jesus Christ is the only ground and pillar of the truth, she is the Bride of Christ who is glorious and without spot or wrinkle because of Christ’s love and provision for her.  The deception of these institutions is compounded by the corruption of the Bible through the work of unredeemed men who corrupt the very Word of God.  The Message is such a devilish work.

Many “Christians” who are esteemed by the visible church have gladly received and extolled the “virtues” of the Message written by Eugene Petersen.  It is a rank paraphrase that adds to and takes away from God’s Word and therefore he stands condemned along with those who receive and promote this aberration.  The list is long; don’t be too shocked if you find those whom you admire associated with this blasphemous work.  Among the more notable are Gordon Fee, Bono, Billy Graham, Joni Eareckson Tada, Bill Hybels, Rick Warren, Warren Wiersbe, Leighton Ford, Leith Anderson, Chuck Swindoll, J. I. Packer, Jerry Jenkins, Jack Hayford, Joyce Meyer, Bill and Gloria Gather, Jay Kesler, Tim Kimmel, James Dobson and it is heavily promoted by the Navigators, through NavPress.  Is it any wonder that there is so much heresy, apostasy, compromise and corruption endemic throughout the visible church, when such a vile counterfeit for God’s Word is praised by its leaders?   This is why God’s Word to His children is to come out from among the demonically deceived majority that makes a pretense of knowing God and His Son Jesus Christ, and loving and obeying His Word the Bible, so that we will not share in God’s judgment upon the apostates.  The obvious truth is that the human heart has no desire to know, love and serve the Savior, but is instead filled with hate against our God and demonstrates this rejection of God by holding fast to the lie.

9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked;  Who can know it?  10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.  Jeremiah 17:9-10

9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.  2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

Let us join with the Holy Spirit in bearing witness to the truth of the gospel through sharing God’s Word with the lost and warning those who are disobedient to turn from the error of their ways that they might be saved.  May God bless us as we stay faithful and true to Him and His glorious Son Jesus Christ.

  1. Eliza, there is so much to say about this post – the best thing to do is to reblog it.
Praying that the Lord will be glorified in His children in this time in history,

Here is an excerpt from this solid Biblical post:

Really liked this article. Great insight and information. I know it is difficult sometimes to name names but I appreciate that you did. There is so much deception out there and it is dangerous. The path is indeed narrow. Thank you, ajc

Yes, it is so sad and disheartening that many who should be esteemed as those who love the Lord Jesus Christ, display their true colors by the associations they form. I praise God for His goodness to us, His children, in opening our eyes and bringing us out of the deception that has engulfed the visible church and is leading to the establishment of the one world religious monstrosity. May we be ever vigilant in watching and rejecting deception as we serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in humble dependence upon Him, sharing His Word with all that their eyes might be opened and they too may be brought into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. God bless you:) Thank you for visiting and commenting. Love in Christ Jesus.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man sees, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:12-26

Take note of this, folks: that: “They did not receive the LOVE of the truth, so that they might be saved.”

We can know the truth, but we must receive the LOVE of the truth so that we may be saved. This Scripture hollered that out to me just now…it’s the first time I’ve seen it. I’ve read it, many times, but today is the first time I’ve seen it.
