Such a Time as This

As believers, we live in a wicked world.  God’s children have always been surrounded by wicked and depraved cultures and civilizations.  God has warned His children throughout the ages to not follow the wicked practices of the nations around them.  In Leviticus the God gives the wicked behavior that He wants His children, the Israelites, to reject.

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them:  ‘I am the Lord your God.  3 According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances.  4 You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances, to walk in them:  I am the Lord your God.  5 You shall therefore keep My statues and My judgments, which is a man does, he shall live by them:  I am the Lord.  6 None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness:  I am the Lord.  7 The nakedness of your father of the nakedness or your mother you shall not uncover.  She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness.  8 the nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover, it is our father’s nakedness.  9 The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere, their nakedness you shall not uncover.  10 The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for theirs is your own nakedness.  11 The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten by your father-she is your sister-you shall not uncover her nakedness.  12 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is near of kin to your father.  13 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is near of kin to your mother.  You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother.  You shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt.  15 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law–she is your son’s wife—you shall not uncover her nakedness.  16 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness.  17 You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, nor shall you take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness.  They are near of king to her.  It is wickedness.  18 Nor shall you take a woman as a rival to her sister, to uncover her nakedness while the other is alive.  19 Also you shall not approach a woman to uncover her naked ness as long as she is in her customary impurity.  20 Moreover you shall not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife, to defile yourself with her.  21 And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God:  I am the Lord.   22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman.  It is an abomination.  23 Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it.  Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it.  It is perversion.  24 Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you.  For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.  You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, either any of your own nation or any stranger who dwells among you 27 (for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you, and thus the land is defiled), 28 lest the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you.  29 For whoever commits any of these abominations, the persons who commit them shall be cut off from among their people.  30 Therefore you shall keep My ordinance, so that you do not commit any of these abominable customs which were committed before you, and that you do not defile yourselves by them:  I am the Lord your God.’”  1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them:  ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord you God am holy.  3 Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths:  I am the Lord your God.  4 Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods:  I am the Lord your God.’”….” 26 ‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying…. 29 ‘Do not prostitute your daughter, to cause her to be a harlot, lest the land fall into harlotry, and the land become full of wickedness…. 31 ‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them:  I am the Lord your God.’….35 ‘You shall do no injustice in judgment, in measurement of length, weight, or volume.  36 You shall have honest scales, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin:  I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.  37 Therefore you shall observe all My statutes and all My judgments, an perform them:  I am the Lord’”… 20:23 ‘And you shall not walk in the statutes of the nation which I am casting out before you; for they commit all these things, and therefore I abhor them…. 26 ‘And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.  27 A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.’”  Leviticus 18:1-19:4, 26, 29, 31, 35-37; 20:23, 26-27

These are the standards of the wicked world ruled by Satan; these are not the works of the Lord.  The Lord reminds the Jews that He is their Lord, and He is holy, therefore they must not commit any of these abominations, which were actually enshrined as statutes within the law and ordinances of the wicked nations, and therefore defile themselves bringing about judgment upon themselves either through the punishment proscribed through the law or God’s judgment corporately upon the nation.   God expects holiness from His people because He is holy.  This standard has not been changed or altered throughout the millennia.   Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, God the Son of God, demands that His bride be chaste and without spot or blemish, turning away from the wicked practices of the surrounding world system.

1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?  2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?  And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?  3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels?  How much more, things that pertain to this life?  4 If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge?  5 I say this to your shame.  Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren?  6 But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers!  7 Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another.  Why do you not rather accept wrong?  Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated?  8 No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!  9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived.  Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.  11 And such were some of you.  But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.  1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Paul, by the Holy Spirit, reminded the Corinthian believers that God’s holy standards are unchanged and all those who name the name of Christ must reject the evil practices of the world around them.  As those who are the chosen of God, we must not be surprised or filled with consternation when unbelievers in the world choose and practice the evil behaviors of this world system, even if they inhabit the visible church system.  We must not think that the United States of America is a Christian nation, because only a nation populated by those who have genuine faith in Christ and live by Spirit controlled obedience to God’s Word are genuine Christians.  As has been the case throughout the ages there is only a small remnant who is truly born again and follow Jesus Christ.  What should we do as we see evil growing unabated throughout our world?

When Haman conspired to destroy the Jews in Persia, Mordecai, the uncles of Queen Esther, came to her, entreating that she go to the king and seek the life of her people.  His words to her should spur us to godly action, “Yet who know whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”  (Esther 4:14)  God has His remnant where and when He wants them for His purposes.  We are here at this time to fight the good fight of faith.  We are here to stand up against evil and false teaching.  We are here at this time to share the gospel for the salvation of lost souls.  We are here to encourage one another to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints ( Jude 3).  All of our holy efforts must be undergirded by faith in Jesus Christ, reliance upon the Holy Spirit of God, deep understanding and reliance upon the Word of God, confidence in our God and Father, and love for one another.  We must share the gospel of Jesus Christ, that He came into the world to save sinners.  That He died upon the cross, taking our punishment, and rose again from the dead for our salvation from judgment and the gift of eternal life.  We must not give the enemy any quarter, but rather expose evil workers and phonies.  Since Christ has called us to a holy life, and has given us His all, may we live for His glory and the furtherance of His work upon this earth.  God bless youJ
