God’s Word in Titus describes doctrine that accords, or agrees with godliness. This message preached by Paul, which he urged Titus to preach and teach the believers on Crete, adorns the gospel of Jesus Christ.
1Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth with accords with godliness, 2in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began, 3but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior; 4To Titus, a true son in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. Titus 1:1-4
God’s elect, chosen for salvation before the world began (2 Timothy 1:9),will have biblical faith focused upon Jesus Christ and His glorious work completed for His beloved through His death upon the cross for their sins and His resurrection from the dead making them victorious over sin, death and the devil through His victory. This faith in Christ, squarely placed upon the testimony given to us in the Scriptures, will produce godly conduct as His beloved redeemed saints look forward to eternity with our glorious Savior and God. This glorious message preached by those appointed by God, is completely trustworthy as its certitude rests utterly upon the absolute truthfulness and faithfulness of God our Savior. Based upon Titus’ testimony and life, Paul counted him as a true son in the faith that they shared; faith in Jesus Christ and His wonderful grace and love for His children, as declared to us by the revelation of Jesus Christ given to Paul which fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies about our Savior.
This wonderful message is for all who will repent of their sin and believe, putting their faith in Jesus Christ their Savior. This is the message preached by all the apostles.
1Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 2 Peter 1:1-9
Peter, by the Holy Spirit, reveals the wonderful provisions that we have by faith in and through our knowledge of Jesus Christ our God and Savior, because of His righteousness and divine power. He then exhorts us to holy living listing godly traits that will accompany salvation as believers seek to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling knowing that it is God who works in them both to will and to do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13). This doctrine that accords with godliness is taught throughout the Scripture, from the book of Genesis through the book of Revelation. God’s judgment upon mankind and His people has always been because they have rejected His ways and chosen their own ways, ways of destruction and damnation.
Recently many believers in Jesus Christ withdrew support from World Vision because of their new employee hiring policy allowing them to hire married homosexual couples. The World Vision board responded to this withdrawal of support by rescinding the policy and issuing a public letter of apology to the offended Bible believing Christians. It is important to realize they never repented of contradicting God’s Word which states that homosexuality is sin. They also never acknowledged that they had sinned against God by accepting homosexual marriage. The letter that the board issued said in part:
“In our board’s effort to unite around the church’s shared mission to serve the poor in the name of Christ, we failed to be consistent with World Vision U.S.’s commitment to the traditional understanding of Biblical marriage and our own Statement of Faith, which says, ” We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God. ” And we also failed to seek enough counsel from our own Christian partners. As a result, we made a change to our conduct policy that was not consistent with our Statement of Faith and our commitment to the sanctity of marriage.
Note the words “traditional understanding of Biblical marriage”. This allows for further amendment to that understanding when the whim of man changes, as it always does. Also note that they failed to seek enough counsel from “our own Christian partners”. The counsel they did receive led them to make their initial employment policy change, but the backlash from Bible believing Christians led them to reconsider. Notice that adherence to their Statement of Faith isn’t dependent upon their dependence upon the solid foundation of God’s Word but rather upon what is and isn’t acceptable within the “Christian community”. Finally consider they do not include the inerrancy of Scripture in their Statement of Faith. This allows for the twisting of Scripture to suit fleshly purposes that are contrary to the revealed will of God. World Vision is an ecumenical organization that does help the poor but is inconsistent in supporting the gospel of Jesus Christ. How does their mission concur with the truth that accords with godliness?
Finally, their stated mission, taken from this letter, is to be
” an international partnership of Christians whose mission is to follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in working with the poor and oppressed to promote human transformation, seek justice, and bear witness to the good news of the Kingdom of God .”
While it is laudable to help the poor, any person’s greatest need is salvation from sin and the wrath of God that rests upon them because of their sin. If sinners are not reconciled to our holy God then they are cast into the Lake of Fire for all of eternity. That is the greatest harm that can befall any human being regardless of their economic station in life. Jesus Christ said that we would always have the poor with us and that the gospel is preached to them (Matthew 26:11 & Luke7:22). He also said, through His brother James, that the poor are especially blessed because of their utter dependence upon God once they have put their faith in Jesus Christ (James 1:9 & 2:5). Sharing the gospel is at best secondary to World Vision. Ministries that focus on sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with the poor and then help their brothers and sisters in the Lord are more deserving of our support.
World Vision’s Board displayed a double-mindedness that is based upon fear of man rather than fear of God. Our Lord God condemns such falsity calling it cursed in Jeremiah chapter 17.
5Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. 6For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited.
7“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. 8For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. Jeremiah 17:5-8
Those of us who embrace the godly doctrine of living in obedience to the Living God through knowing and obeying His Word will have God’s blessing upon our lives. Those who choose to follow the counsel of man are doomed to lives of cursedness from the Lord unless they repent and follow Him.
