Let Your Light Shine

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Then Jesus spoke to them again saying, “I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”  John 8:12

Those who follow Christ do not walk in darkness but in light because they have the light of life, Jesus Christ indwelling them.  God tells us in His Word in Ephesians chapter 5:

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light.  Ephesians 5:8

Since we belong to Jesus Christ through faith in Him, how do we live as children of light?  That same chapter in Ephesians gives us the answer.

The fifth chapter of Ephesians is a very practical chapter.  It contrasts darkness with light; walk in the Spirit with walk in the flesh.  It starts out with a very high and lofty standard.

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.  And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.  But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for the saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.  For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of God.  Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.  Therefore do not be partakers with them.  Ephesians 5:1-8

The standard of our conduct is to be God Himself, our holy and true Heavenly Father.  We must order our lives to reflect the very character of God, there must not be a hint of darkness in our character or conduct.  We must love as Jesus Christ loved us.  Our love must be sacrificial and in obedience to the Father as was Christ’s love.  Our love is to be marked by holy conduct that is lowly, gentle, longsuffering, tenderhearted, focused upon our oneness in Christ Jesus and His Word.  We are then told by God through the apostle Paul what we must abhor and avoid at all costs because His wrath is exercised against those who live in sin.

So much of our world today is focused on satisfying sexual lusts, at least if what the entertainment industry tells us is true.  God’s word tells us that any sex outside of monogamous marital sex is sin.  It is getting so bad in this country that any and all manner of sexual perversion is considered to be normal.  Because homosexuality is considered by some to be normal, now there is a drive to legitimize bigamy and pedophilia.  Our walk is to be spotless in this matter; we are to abstain from all sexual immorality.  Those who are sexually immoral bear witness that they are not children of light and are destined for God’s wrath.  Any leaders in the visible church who focus on sex or accept homosexuality as normal must be shunned; we are commanded to not be partakers with them.  We must also avoid all vile, foolish, coarse talking and jesting.  That means the majority of entertainment nowadays is off limits to us.  There are verses in Psalm 101 that are very instructive in this matter.

I will sing of mercy and justice; To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.  I will behave wisely in a perfect way.  Oh, when will You come to me?  I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.  I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.  A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know wickedness.  Psalm 101:1-4

We must focus our attention on the Lord and His goodness and turn away from what is embraced by the wicked.  We must give ourselves to praise, prayer, knowing the Scriptures through study and meditation, good works, and loving fellowship with one another.

We must also protect our hearts from covetousness.  The remedy for this evil is to be generous and give to others and to the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.  But we must be careful not to give to those who are themselves covetous and are not actually serving the Lord, but are instead serving their own bellies.  They advertise themselves by always talking about money and always promoting false doctrines.

Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.  For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.  Romans 16:17-18

We will protect ourselves from deception as we become diligent students of God’s Word, the Holy Bible.  We must also be careful about the charitable works that we support making sure they serve the Lord or at least help those whom they say they will help.

Our loving Heavenly Father then reminds us how He rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of light through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of the light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.  For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.  But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.  Therefore He says, “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”  See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time for the days are evil.  Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.  Ephesians 5:8-21

As children of light we shine through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives who engenders within us His fruit that consists of righteousness, goodness and truth.  Our living is in accord with the commandments of God in the Holy Scriptures, which is the Word of truth.  It is the Word of God the Holy Spirit uses in our lives to inform our living for the Lord.  We are not legalists, but neither are we antinomians.  Such living means that we exhort the ungodly to turn from their wicked ways, repent of their sins and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior from sin.  We share the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ that He died upon the cross for their sins and rose again from the dead for their justification, so they can have their sins forgiven and have eternal life, a new life of living for Jesus Christ, as they repent of their sin and believe in Him.  We share the gospel with unchurched and churched sinner alike.  We expose the evil whether in word or in deed.  Our lives are marked by concerted effort to use our time for God and His glory, knowing His will, encouraging one another, singing to the Lord, thanking Him in all circumstances  and submitting to one another in the fear of God.  We walk as children of the light because we follow the One Who is the light of the world.

Through faith in Jesus Christ we have cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12).  We are children of the light because of Who Jesus Christ is and we have believed in Him.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it.  There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  This man came for a witness, to bear witness to the Light, that all through him might believe.  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.  That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name:  who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.  John 1:1-13

As His beloved children of light let us live for His glory!
