Word Power

God Almighty reveals to us the importance of His Word, the Bible, in a number of verses in the epistles in the New Testament.  God exhorts us about His Word in the book of James the first chapter.

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save you souls.  But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.  James 1:21-25

Notice James says the implanted word is able to save our souls.  It is the Word of God which the Holy Spirit uses the reveal our wickedness before Him.  It is the Word of God which the Holy Spirit uses to bring us to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.  We are called to be obedient to the Word of God, and not be forgetful hearers who think that listening to the Word of God is enough.  If we don’t obey the Word, then its transformative power is not operative in our lives.  As we obey the Word of God, doing His good will, He blesses us.  This is the work of faith.

Again in 1 Peter the first chapter we see the power of the Word of God in the heart of the believer.  First of all, we are born again through the living and abiding Word of God.

having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.  The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever.”  Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.  1 Peter 1:23-25

When we believe the gospel, the good news about Jesus Christ; that He is God the Son of God who perfectly fulfilled all righteousness, died the death of a condemned sinner in our stead and rose again the third day being victorious over sin, death and the devil, our sins are forgiven and we have eternal life because we have believed the report given to us throughout the Scriptures about God’s Son.  We are born again by believing the Word of God, which is the result of the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts through the use of His Word.  Then as we obey the truth …

Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 1 Peter 1:22,

…the outworking of that obedience to the truth will be sincere love of the brethren.  That sincere fervent love will result in kindness, forgiveness, loving consideration, and gracious giving.

We see the same exhortation in 1 Peter 2:1-3 that was given to us in James 1:21…

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.  If indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.  1 Peter 2:1-3

The Holy Spirit, through Peter, exhorts us to lay aside the evil to which we are so prone, and desire the pure milk of the word like a newborn baby desires that life sustaining milk which causes her to grow.  It is the Word of God the Holy Spirit uses in our lives to cause us to grow.  Notice this is conditional upon believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.  If we haven’t been born again then it is certain we won’t desire God’s Word.  A major aspect of the growth the Lord desires in our lives is given to us in God’s command found in 2 Peter 3:18,

… but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To Him be the glory both now and forever.  Amen.  2 Peter 3:18

As we study and obey God’s Word we will grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ which is vital to our walk with Him.

Referring back to 1 Peter 1:23-25

…having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.  The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever.”  Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.  1 Peter 1:23-25

The Holy Spirit contrasts the incorruptible Word of God with the fallible, empty, vain word of man.  Notice, all that man does perishes and is lost.  It may have an appearance of beauty for a time, but ultimately it wilts and withers away and comes to nothing.  There are countless books, blogs, movies, radio messages, fruitless sermons and homilies that affect nothing but further degradation of the human heart by indwelling sin and devilish deception.  The word of man is limp and lifeless lacking the inherent power necessary to bring the dead to life.  Only God’s Word applied to the human heart by the Holy Spirit has the ability to save the soul as it leads us to abhor our sin and put our faith in Christ Jesus.

But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.  2 Timothy3:14-17

The teaching of man will only equip us for deception and further corruption.

Within the church today man’s word is replacing God’s Word in the heart and lives of His children and those who profess to believe in Him.  The situation is dire.  The church is floundering and failing.  It has lost its mooring and direction because it has rejected God’s Word and replaced it with the empty worthless doctrine of man.

For My people have committed two evils:  They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water.  Jeremiah 2:13

When we reject God’s Word in favor of man’s teaching what does that say about us?  It says that we fear man rather than God and would rather please men than God.  We have a serious choice to make that has eternal consequences; will we fill our hearts and minds with the living Word of the Living God, or will we feed upon the dry, lifeless, empty sawdust of man’s opinions and theories that have no ability to build us up on our most holy faith, but instead lead us away from God and trap us in the deceitful schemes of our enemy, the devil.  Truthfully, the word we prefer says volumes about our eternal destination.  If we see God use His Word in our lives as outlined in the Scriptures and we willingly yield to His truth we give evidence of salvation.  We see the implanted Word that is able to save our souls operative in our lives.  But if we choose instead any of the countless steps, guidelines, precepts, or plans of man that are said to be the latest greatest thing that we need to do, then we are giving evidence that God’s Word is not implanted in our lives and we are not saved.  If you see yourself in the second group of individuals there is still time to repent and return to the Word of God which is able to save your souls.  It is our only source for revelation of our Father’s plan of redemption of the lost through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.  Desire the Word of God fervently that your sin may be exposed and the remedy declared, which is faith in God’s Son Jesus Christ.  Believe what God’s Holy Word tells you about your dire situation of being a slave to sin, deceived by the devil, entrapped by the world system, without hope and God in the world, under God’s just wrath for eternity.  Believe the testimony declared in the Scriptures, though you were helpless and dead in your trespasses and sins, the power of God’s love and salvation has been revealed through His Son Jesus Christ Who died on the cross for your sins and rose again from the dead for your justification so that as you place your faith in Him, Jesus Christ, you will be saved from your dire predicament.  Believe what the Holy Scriptures tell us about our wonderful Savior and Lord, the glorious Son of God, Jesus Christ, Who is God.  Repent of your sins, put your faith in Him so that you will have eternal life and be filled with His Holy Spirit.  Then desire the pure milk of the Word that you may grow thereby.
