Today’s Sadducees

In order to know who the Sadducees are today, we must go to the Scriptures and see what they were like when Jesus Christ walked this earth.   First, according to the Bible, God’s Word, the Sadducees rejected biblical belief in the miraculous and the spiritual realm.

But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”  And when he has said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees; and the assembly was divided.  For Sadducees say that there is no resurrection-and no angel or spirit; but Pharisees confess both.  Acts 23:6-7

Jesus Christ rebuked the Sadducees for their unbelief when they tried to prove their position of unbelief to Him by a “parable” of their own.

The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, saying:  “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.  Now there were with us seven brothers.  The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother.  Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh.  Last of all the woman died also.  Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be?  For they all had her.”  Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.  For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.  But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?  God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”  Luke adds the following in Luke chapter 20:

“But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’”  Luke 20:37

The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection, angels or the spiritual realm because they did not believe in the Scriptures and so were ignorant of the power of God.  The god they believed in was a god of their own liking for their own benefit so they wouldn’t have to answer to the true God, or so they believed.  Notice, they referred to Jesus as teacher, and they quoted Moses, but they did so to prove their intellectual superiority and to show the foolishness of belief in the resurrection.  Jesus Christ rebukes and exhorts them by kindly revealing to them their error.  He reproves them for their unbelief and then tells them the truth of the reality of the resurrection, and so demolishes their “parable”.  Finally He uses God’s Word the way it is intended to be used, to show the truth and the glory of who God really is and that He is the One who is the source of life.  The verse from Luke is added to show that Jesus acknowledged their belief in the superiority of Moses, and so He quotes from what Moses wrote concerning God’s revelation of Himself at the burning bush to refute their unbelief.

The Sadducees believed in a god, but not the God of the Scriptures, rejecting His power and the spiritual realm.  They called Jesus, teacher, but they believed that they were superior to Him.  They relied on their own logic in spiritual matters, and when they quoted the Bible, they did it incorrectly.  They believed only certain passages of the Scriptures to be “from God.”  The religious liberals of our day are direct descendants of the Sadducees.  Everything that is revealed about the Sadducees from the Word of God is true about liberals.  The liberals have a made up god that in no way resembles God in the Scriptures, and they deny anything having to do with the revelation of God, either the Bible or His mighty works throughout history.   The Sadducees were also into religion for their own aggrandizement, much as the liberals of today.

Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison….And when they had brought them, they set them before the council.  And the high priest asked them, saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name?  And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!”   Acts 5:17 & 27-28.

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do ?  For this Man works many signs.  “If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”  And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” John 11:47-50

Obviously, the Sadducees, along with the Pharisees, were more concerned about their powerful, prestigious positions of authority as religious leaders than they were with the truth about Jesus Christ, the Messiah.  So it is today, religious liberals, love their authority over others and despise the truth.   They want the acclaim and fame and so they disparage the glorious Son of God, Jesus Christ.  They deny all of the biblical doctrines regarding our Savior, Jesus Christ, from His virgin birth, to His miracles, His vicarious death upon the cross, and, most importantly, His resurrection from the dead.  Paul warned us about hope in this life only in 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.  1 Corinthians 15:19

Jesus Christ warned us to beware of their doctrine, their false teaching:

Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”  Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.  Matthew 16:6 & 12

If we are to obey Jesus Christ, that means we must avoid liberals and their false teaching.  We don’t need their approval nor do we need their affirmation.  Unfortunately, there are those within the church who have tried to join the living with the dead by seeking for and reaching out to those who deny Jesus Christ in no uncertain terms, even calling them brothers in Christ.  There is one person in particular who has been devoted to rank heretical modernists for years, that person is Billy Graham.  He called Karl Barth “the great theologian” even though Barth denied the virgin birth, biblical faith, and the infallibility and inerrancy of the Bible.  Billy Graham had Bishop James A. Pike open his 1959 crusade with prayer, even though Pike was a gross sinner who rejected the Bible and faith in Christ and eventually embraced the occult.  Billy Graham had Malcolm Muggeridge as the featured speaker at the Congress on World Evangelization in 1974, even though Muggeridge disbelieved and mocked the truth that God had a Son born of a virgin who died for our sins and rose again from the dead.  Those who are the friends of the enemies of God are His enemies for they promote what is evil.

Adulterers and adulteresses!  Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?  Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.  James 4:4

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.  He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.  If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.  2 John 9-11

By speaking well of the enemies of God, Billy furthered their evil works, as do all who do not expose the wickedness of false teachers and false teaching.  We cannot be man pleasers and honor God at the same time.  Genuine love for our Savior and our brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ demands that we expose the error, reprove the sinners, warn the brethren, and remain faithful to our Lord rejecting the apostate compromisers like Billy Graham.

This is very much like what is happening today. I pray that you enjoy it.

  6. Too bad about Billy Graham…compromise never gets good results, even if the motive is evangelism and “winning souls”. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 should be understood better–and obeyed.

Praise God and our Lord Jesus Christ!! We must choose God’s word and never man’s word. Only God’s word abides forever. When we see the abomination standing where he ought not, we must leave. LORD please help us to be more like Jesus, only saying what He hears the Father saying and in the manner He hears Him saying it.
