Standing for the Truth

I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.  1 John 2:21

The goal of John, directed by the Holy Spirit, in writing his first epistle was to stand for the truth and oppose the lie.  It has been famously said that if we don’t stand for the truth then we will fall for the lie.  How do we stand for the truth?  First and foremost, like the Apostle John, we have to receive the love of the truth that we should be saved.

…and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish because they did not received the love of the truth, that they might be saved.   And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,… 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11

In the early “1980’s” I confessed to God my Father in prayer, by His glorious grace, that I would trust Him and His Word, and reject the empty, deceitful, destructive teachings of man.  He answered my prayer by giving me a great love for His Word and clarity of understanding by His Holy Spirit.  This is something He does for all of His children.  If we instead reject the truth God will curse us by sending us strong delusion that we should believe the lie.  This was written by Paul in relation to the Antichrist, but we may apply it to any and all who reject the truth.  Are you standing for the truth?

We must define the truth, and we can trust what Jesus Christ, Who is the way, the truth, and the life, tells us.  Firstly, He said He had come into this world to bear witness to the truth.

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”  Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.  Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”  John 18:37

If we are of the truth, if we have received the love of the truth given in salvation, then we will listen to Jesus.  He fully and completely bore witness to the truth.  His testimony was untainted by error, distortion or falsehood; we can trust completely what He has to say.  Jesus said in John 17:17:  “Sanctify them by Your truth.  Your Word is truth.  God’s Word, the Bible is our source of truth.  It is truth from beginning to end, without admixture of error and completely correct in all that it declares, being inspired by God the Holy Spirit, and written by men whom He chose beforehand.  So, as we stand for the truth of the Word of God, we are standing for the truth.  Are you standing for the truth?

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  1 John 1:6-8

We must hold to the truth of the Scriptures and reject the demonic, delusional, damning lies of man, if not we walk in darkness.  We must agree with God, that we are sinners, and therefore have sin in our lives which separates us from God.

As it is written:  “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.  They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.  Romans 3:10-12

…For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.   Romans 3: 22-23

We must understand and believe the truth that sin, as describe by God and not by man, brings God’s just judgment, and all outside of Christ are already under God’s wrath and justly condemned to eternity in hell.

“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” John 3:19-21

“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.  He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:35-36

We are also commanded to believe what God says about sending His Son Jesus Christ, that He is the Savior of the world and the propitiation for our sins.

And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.  1 John 4:14

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  1 John 4:10

Jesus Christ is our Savior, our only Savior, Who saves us from the just punishment due our sins because of His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.  1 Timothy 1:15

…looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.  Titus 2:13-14

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.  Ephesians 2:4-10

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain.  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle-I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying-a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.  1 Timothy 2:3-7

As we can see from this last verse from 1 Timothy that our faith must  be fully founded upon the truth of our sinfulness, the truth of our glorious Savior Jesus Christ, His all sufficient work for us on the cross.

But He, because he continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.  Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.  For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.  For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.  Hebrews 7:24-28

For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another-He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.  And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.  To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.  Hebrews 9:24-28

The truth is that we are saved by grace through faith as we believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ, the truth that He is God, and the truth that He has saved us for eternity , for His good pleasure, and for good works that He has appointed for us.  Are you standing for the truth?

As we stand for the truth we must reject all lies and liars.

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanders, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power.  And from such people turn away! 2 Timothy 3:1-5

These evil workers have a form of godliness, through tradition, liturgical services, through man made doctrines, but, of course, since they are not workers for the truth of Jesus Christ they have no power over the flesh, not being indwelt by the Holy Spirit and not holding fast to the Head, Jesus Christ.  We must reject such as these.  We must also rebuke and refute those who speak lies, claiming to be of God.

…holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.  For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain Titus 1:9-11

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.  For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.  Jude 3-4

We must oppose the lie and put forth the truth trusting the Lord to deliver the deceived from the snares of the enemy, relying on the Holy Spirit to lead us in our approach, which depends upon the character of the deceived.

in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:25-26

One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”  This testimony is true.  Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. Titus 1:12-14

False teaching abounds within the visible church in these last days.

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 1 Timothy 4:1-3

The need of this hour is to stand unmovable for the truth, exhorting, correcting, rebuking, and leading all to the truth of the Word of God which reveals to us our need for His Son as our Savior from His just wrath, and to be steadfast in our defense of the Bible as the only revealed Word of God, and to vigorously expose the lie.  Are you standing for the truth?
