Deception in the Church

Brethren, be on your guard for deception has crept into the church wholesale.  It has crept into the church through false teachers and false brethren.

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.  2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.   3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.  2 Peter 2:1-3

6 “My people have been lost sheep.  Their shepherds have led them astray; They have turned them away on the mountains.  They have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting place.  7 All who found them have devoured them; And their adversaries said, ‘We have not offended, Because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, The Lord, the hope of their fathers.”  Jeremiah 50:6-7

28 “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.  29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.  30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.  Acts 20:28-30

4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.  Jude 4

19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.  Jude 19

Looking at these verses we can identify the marks of false teachers.  They secretly bring in destructive heresies and deny the Lord Jesus Christ.  Destructive heresies are doctrines that oppose the sound teaching of the Scriptures.  They will rely on books and the opinions of men rather than the pure Word of God.  They deny Jesus Christ by denying He is God, or claimed to be God; they say His redemptive work on the cross isn’t sufficient and must be added to by our works, baptism, the works of others, suffering in purgatory, or rule keeping.  They are greedy and look at believers as a means of lining their coffers.  They use books, symposiums, seminars, schools, the pastorate, videos, music, movies, supposedly “good works” and all manner of merchandise to enrich themselves.  They talk much about money, using guilt to convince those who listen to them to hand over their hard earned money.  They extort and abuse the elderly and those who are entering their twilight years.  These are evil vile abusers of those who desire to know and obey Jesus Christ.  These false teachers are the greatest hypocrites and should be avoided at all costs.  False teachers lead the people away from God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ and instead draw them away after themselves through their false teaching and perversion of the Scriptures.  They are ungodly and count on others extending grace and forgiveness to them so they can continue in their wickedness.  They encourage others to continue in wickedness and sin and don’t exhort others that the Beloved of the Lord depart from unrighteousness and sin.  They can only live in the flesh since they are devoid of the Spirit and are led by the devil.  God’s Word commands that we separate ourselves from these false teachers, and that means avoiding their assemblies, concerts, seminars, books, music, whatever the enemy uses to lead the vast majority of those who claim to be Christians astray.

14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.  For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness?  And what communion has light with darkness:  15 And what accord has Christ with Belial?  Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?  16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?  For you are the temple of the living God.  As God has said:  “I will dwell in them And walk among them.  I will be their God, and they shall be My people.  17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord.  Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” 18  “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.”  2 Corinthians 6:14-18

We have to remember that deception has also entered the church through false brethren.

9 That this is a rebellious people, Lying children, Children who will not hear the law of the Lord; 10 Who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.  11 Get out of the way, Turn aside from the path, Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.”  Isaiah 30:9-11

6 My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge.  Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.   Hosea 4:6

12 I have written for him the great things of My law, But they were considered a strange thing.  Hosea 8:12

You have plowed wickedness;  You have reaped iniquity.  You have eaten the fruit of lies, because you trusted in your own way, in the multitude of your mighty men.  Hosea 10:13

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;  4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.   2 Timothy 4:3-4

“For My people have committed two evils:  They have forsaken Me , the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water.  Jeremiah 2:13

10…and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  11 And for his reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,  that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.  2 Thessalonians 2:10-11

False brethren reject the Lord and His Word, the Bible.  They reject the knowledge that comes from knowing Jesus Christ and His Word and substitute the empty opinions of men which have their origins in the doctrines of demons.  Rejecting God and His truth they embrace the lie, because they have pleasure in unrighteousness and therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion.  They desire their own way and will not submit to God’s way.  They turn away from the truth and away from God.  They are of the flesh and do not have the Holy Spirit just like the false teachers.   We can try to bring these back to the faith by the power of God, but if they still reject the truth regarding Jesus Christ and His Word, then we must leave them to God.

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that  he who turns a sinner from  the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.   James  5:19-20

Deception has entered the church through the enemy, through false teachers and false brethren.  The enemy has always used this tactic against the people of God through the ages.  When we read the Old and New Testament, we see prophets warning the children of God over and over again to turn away from idols and lies and to cling to God and His truth.  The distinguishing marks of those who truly know Jesus Christ are their love for God, love for God’s Word and love for God’s children.  Those who are false will always reject those who are true.  Those who are true must reprove those who stray from the faith, seek to restore them to the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ and then reject those who refuse correction.  May God empower us for this task as we seek to live to God’s glory holding fast to His truth, His Son and His children.

  1. It certainly is extraordinary to see the rapid spread of false teaching, ever increasing even in the relatively short time I have been paying attention (the past year or so). I have always known of the most obvious false teachers…the TV scammers, the big money mega-stars. For many of us (and ironically for many of my discerning non-Christian friends!) these are the easy ones to avoid. Still, warnings are necessary as these are not obvious wolves to countless others!

What has really got my attention now is the wave of ‘everyday’ pastors and congregations being deceived by a blend of false teachings from so many different camps…some emergent theology with lots of talk of being missional and relational, sprinkled liberally with words of knowledge, a sign or a wonder and maybe even a deliverance ministry, wrapped neatly in a 40 Day Purpose package, all designed to service congregations full of people who were saved through an Alpha course they attended. It can creep in slowly, one pre-packaged program or conference at a time, until a church is theologically off the rails and doesn’t even know it. And the families who do leave are just seen as divisive or disloyal.

Keep up with your excellent, biblical articles. You have a great balance of encouragement and warning, and are a blessing to the Body of Christ.

  2. One of the greatest problems facing the church is this: They are not studying, reading, praying, and asking the Spirit for understanding, but instead leaning upon the teaching of man and that which fulfills the carnal desire. This of course is just my opinion. Great article by the way, really enjoyed it.

Maybe I can Help! The Church you send them to should be the one Jesus founded. If you are not sure, go to the Church website and see when it was founded. If it wasn’t 2000 years ago it is the wrong church. If the church doesn’t claim to be founded by Jesus , it is not the right church. I will pray for you, please pray for me.

Amen! That is what I have done through the years and encourage others to do, check out the church website and see if they are following false teachers/teachings. If they aren’t following Jesus Christ and His Word, which He has preserved for us in the Bible, then they are not the church that was founded by Jesus Christ. I think this is what you mean, right? God’s church is founded upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (God’s Word), with Jesus Christ the chief cornerstone.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in the ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. Ephesians 2:13-21

There seems to be increasingly different types of deception to choose from: suited to all tastes. But the nature of all of those false paths is easily exposed if held up against the standard of scripture IF we avoid the convenience (and laziness) of relying on “proof texts” rather than the revelation given throughout the whole of scripture.

Excellent point! I know from my own personal experience, as related in Dichotomies, it took the Holy Spirit applying the truth of God’s Word to my heart to empower me to recognize false teaching and then reject it based upon the revelation of God’s Word. God bless you and thank you for reading this blog:)

“We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.” (Jer 51:9 AV)
There are many who say the modern day organized Nicolaitan “church” is not Babylon, but I believe that most who read this blog and many others like it, would agree that at least, the present Nicolaitan, pharisaical “church” is part and parcel of, and connected with Babylon.

I have said for a number of years that the apostate Nicolaitan church can’t be reformed, but rather, it must be abandoned entirely. As the LORD said in the above scripture,” forsake her”.

We can pray for those who are held by the chains of deceit and lack of discernment. It indeed takes a work of the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to the truth of what is going on within the church and to give us the wisdom and understanding to expose the error and help others to stay true to the Bible and stand for the truth. Often times, because there is a lack of repentance on the part of the leadership and fellowship of the church, those who are rejecting error must leave. Praise God for those who repent and recover their love for the Savior Jesus Christ as they contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints. God bless you:)

Amen, as we also walked that same path at one time or another. At least most of us did. The prayers of those who’ve been brought out, and the power of the Holy Spirit has borne fruit, because there does seem to be a move of God the past several decades bringing multitudes out of the Nicolaitan system. It is indeed a bondage.

Thank you Bill, and God bless you. God calls us to believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and to love one another. We cannot believe in Jesus Christ unless we hold fast to the truth of the Scriptures. So we must all rightly divide the Word of truth for our own edification and spiritual well-being and for the blessing of others. We are not called to study the opinions of men, but to study the sound doctrine of the Scriptures taught us by the Holy Spirit as we study to show ourselves approved rightly dividing the Word of truth. In these dark deceptive days we must obey Christ’s command to see to it that no one deceive us and hold fast to Jesus Christ and His Word, the Bible. I pray that all of us, as God’s children, take seriously the admonition to study God’s Word by the power of the Holy Spirit in obedience to Christ and God our Father so that we honor God and love one another.

    Hi, Eliza
Thank you for visiting my blog which opened the way for me to discover yours. From what I’ve seen and read you are a blessing to many and I would now count myself among them. I agree with many of those who have responded, and would humbly like to share my reflections and perhaps contribute to the encouraging of the brethren. From my essay “Truth is Truth….I concluded with these two paragraphs:

A primary weapon of the Adversary is lies and untruth, but a lie cannot be seen for what it is if no one believes in truth. No wonder the Adversary has such an intense campaign going on against the existence of absolute truth. If he can get people to believe that all that matters is “what is true for them,” or “the truth they find inside themselves,” he will succeed in his mission to “steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).” People will meet God at the resurrection and find that “their truth” was just a lie they were comfortable with while on earth. At that time the scripture that says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Prov. 14:12 and 16:25; said twice for emphasis) will be seen to be “the truth,” but it will be too late for those who did not seek God and get saved.

As your brother in Christ….may I just plead with you that we should believe the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, that the Word of God is the truth (John 17:17), and we should labor hard to understand it, believe it, and teach it to others. At the end of time, the only theory, idea, concept, ideology, or belief that matters will be those that are actually true, that correspond to the reality that God has set in place. We need to honor God, and bless ourselves and others by discovering truth and communicating it to those around us. ……would not you agree?

Praise God that Christ’s true body is protected and led by Him. The counterfeit church unfortunately is used by the enemy to bring reproach upon those who really belong to Him. That was a exclamation my husband made the other day when watching something about the false church. We can overcome by our testimony, reliance upon the Holy Spirit and faithfulness to God’s Word. God bless us.
