The Everlasting Gospel

Dear Brethren we must always remember that the gospel is the instrument of our salvation.  The gospel has always been the means God has used to reconcile lost sinners to Himself.

Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth-to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people-,  Revelation 14:6

We are taught by God in Hebrews chapter thirteen that the gospel is an everlasting covenant.

Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant…Hebrews 13:20

There is no other means that God has ever given to His people to ensure their salvation.  Law keeping never saved any individual; law keeping without faith in Jesus Christ leads to prideful self-righteousness and condemnation, whereas obeying God’s Word through faith in Christ Jesus and the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit verifies our salvation.

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20

Do we then make void the law through faith?  Certainly not!  On the contrary, we establish the law…  Romans 3:31

For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin:  He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.  Romans 8:3-4

There are many references in the New Testament to show that the Israelites throughout history were saved by the gospel of Jesus Christ just as believers have been saved since Jesus Christ ascended into Heaven.

Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.  And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying , “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”  So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.”  Galatians 3:7-10

What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh?  For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.  For what does the Scripture say?  “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”  Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt.  But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:  “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”  Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also?  For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.  Romans 4:1-9

Just to verify that the faith spoken of here is faith in Jesus Christ we can look at John chapter eight and Hebrews chapter four.

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”  John 8:56

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.  For indeed, the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.  Hebrews 4:1-2

So we see that all saved individuals through all time have been saved by faith in Jesus Christ and what He has done for us on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.

This is another area where false doctrine can lead us astray.  There are those who teach that the Israelites were saved by keeping the law.  There are also those who teach that the gospel Paul preached was different from the gospel that Jesus Christ preached.  How can that be when the gospel Paul preached was given to Him by Jesus Christ?

But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.  For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.  Galatians 1:11-12

And the fact is Jesus Christ is never going to contradict Himself.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  Hebrews 13:8

Remember that our salvation completely rests upon the gospel of Jesus Christ that is held out to all mankind by God’s grace and anyone who has ever been saved from God’s just wrath and eternal damnation has been saved through belief in the gospel.

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain.  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received:  that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.  After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep.  1 Corinthians 15:1-6

Let us believe the Scriptures, hold fast to the gospel and glory in the grace of God held out to us through Jesus Christ and the satisfaction of the wrath of God He realized for us through His death on the cross receiving the punishment that our sins deserve.   Jesus Christ is our deliverer and the One who gives us eternal life through His resurrection from the dead.  Praise God for His great love, mercy and grace to us.
