Two Ways

There are two ways, and only two ways to live in this world.  One way results in indignation and wrath, and the other way results in eternal life.  In the book of Romans Paul is making the case that everyone on this planet is a sinner.  In the first three chapters he is focusing exclusively on this truth and we can see his reasoning as we look at a few verses within those three chapters.

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.  20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.  24 Therefore God also gave the up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.  Amen.  26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions.  For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.  27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.  28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:18-32

This description of humanity is incised with laser like accuracy.  We see these evil practices all around us, and if truth be told, we have been convicted of our own sinfulness through these verses.  Let’s move on to chapter two of Romans.

1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself, for you who judge practice the same things.  2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.  3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?  4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?  5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”:  7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness-indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.  Romans 2:1-10

God through Paul is condemning all who reject His truth as sinners, even if they condemn evil practices in others, because they too do evil.  Chapter three is the clincher in showing the true nature of mankind.

9 What then?  are we better than they?  Not at all.  For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.  10 As it is written:  “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.  12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”  13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”, 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”  15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”Romans 3:9-18

Paul shows in these verses that all alike are sinners, evil and depraved.  The final statement is the capstone; there is no fear of God before their eyes.  No fear of God to moderate their thoughts, words or actions; no fear of God to govern the dictates of their hearts.  All of mankind is in this first way.

All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way…  Isaiah 53:6

This way, the normal way of man, leads to God’s eternal wrath and judgment in hell.

There is another way.  It is the way of life and blessing.  On this way God smiles upon His children though He may oft times need to discipline them.  This way leads to an eternal home in heaven.  This way leads to knowing God intimately and loving His Son Jesus Christ.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.  7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted.  Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter; And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.  8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation?  For He was cut of from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.  9 And they made His grave with the wicked-But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.  10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.  When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.  11 He shall see the labor of His soul and be satisfied.  By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify the many, For He shall bear their iniquities.  12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.  Isaiah 53:6-12

This way leads us to repent of our sin and believe in Jesus Christ having faith in Him and what He has done for us as described in Isaiah 53.  This way is the way of eternal life where we will be with Him, our beloved Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

By our very nature and by the deceit of the devil, we may think that we have eternal life, but we have never really believed in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  Maybe we have believed a caricature of Him taught us by fallen, evil men.  These verses are out of order on purpose to make an important point.  Listen to what Jesus Christ said in the book of Matthew.

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Matthew 7:15

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.  14 “Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.  Matthew 7:13-14

Why are there few who find it?  It is because of the false prophets who contradict and twist the Scriptures; it is because of our own rejection of the fear of God, and it is because the enemy of our souls, Satan, controls this wicked world.  Which way are you going?  Are you doomed to destruction or are do you have eternal life?  Study the Bible, preferably the King James or New King James Versions.  Repent of your sin and believe in Jesus Christ who is the Way.  Settle this issue before you lose your own soul.
