The Spirit of Truth bears witness to Jesus Christ and what He has done for us.
1 John 5:5-13 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood-Jesus Christ; not only by water; but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
God Almighty bears witness about Jesus Christ from heaven through His written Word the Bible and through the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The work that Jesus Christ accomplished here on Earth bears witness that He is the Messiah, since the Holy Spirit was given to Him without measure, He perfectly fulfilled the Law of God, and He died on the cross for our sins, His shed blood cleansing us from all sin. The Holy Spirit bears witness to the truth through convicting us of our sin, showing us that we are justly condemned by God and are bound for eternal damnation in the lake of fire, and then pointing us to Jesus Christ, the One Who came to save us from our sins and God’s just wrath, and Who gives us eternal life because He is our life. If we are truly saved the Holy Spirit will bear witness with our spirit that we are the children of God by reaffirming our belief in the truth, the Bible, and enabling us to obey Jesus Christ as we obey His Word, the Bible. What the Holy Spirit has written by the Apostles and Prophets and preserved for our learning and edification will strengthen our belief in Jesus Christ and our obedience of the truth.
If we ignore the Scriptures and follow after the vain, empty, deadly teachings of fallen men our faith will be shaken and we will walk in darkness.
1 John 1:1-10 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life- the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us-that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full. This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
We must hold fast to the testimony of Scripture regarding the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and go to Him, confessing and repenting from our sin, and He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness and we will have fellowship with Him, which is eternal life. If we don’t hold to the clear teaching of the Scriptures regarding our sin and Who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for us, then we walk in darkness, believe a lie and do not practice the truth. Within the church today there is a frontal assault upon the truth of the Scriptures regarding our sin, Who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for us. We must reject the lie and hold to the truth. We must expose the lie, rebuke it and proclaim the truth. Love for the Father and His Son and His children compels us to do nothing less. Let us trust the Spirit of truth to guide us into all truth as we study the Scriptures and then expose, reject, refute and rebuke the lies that are proliferating in the church as God’s beloved faithful children.
