Love of the truth is essential to our spiritual well-being as believers in Jesus Christ. Love of the truth is essential for the health of the church. Those who will be deceived by the Antichrist are vulnerable because they have rejected the truth and believed the lie.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
The love of the truth, God’s Word, which reveals to us our sin, His righteous judgment and wrath, the love of God in sending His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins so that we can be reconciled to God and be accepted as His beloved children, the glorious gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who is our salvation, will protect us from being deceived by the Antichrist. Love of the truth is a gift from God as indicated by the above verses and accompanies salvation. Belief in the truth spurs us to live righteous lives pleasing God in all that we do. Love of the truth moves us to study God’s Word that we might know, understand and obey the truth, and strengthen us to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Paul encourages Timothy, in the second letter to Timothy, to know and understand God’s Word and then contrasts that with what the world pursues. Unfortunately, we see the church today rushing after the world and embracing false teaching to its own destruction.
2 Timothy 2:15-19 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
As people within in the church turn from the truth and embrace the empty teachings of men the error is embraced by greater numbers of professing Christians producing disastrous results akin to cancer ravaging the human body. The church becomes sick and ineffectual not able to impact the world for Jesus Christ. Again from these verses we can see that turning from the truth not only hurts those who do so, but it also negatively affects those who are impacted by their false teaching, resulting in the undermining of their faith. Many leave the Christian church because false teaching has led them astray and undone the faith that they at one time professed. The good news is that those who belong to Jesus Christ will be led by Him to reject false teaching and hold fast to the truth. Those who belong to Jesus Christ will depart from the iniquity of false teaching and hold fast to His Word, His truth, the Bible.
If you have held to a lie and become anemic in your love of the Bible you can confess your sin, repent, and ask the Lord to restore His love of the truth in your heart. He will do so. If you find that your holding to the vain teachings of men indicates that you aren’t really saved, you can still repent, confess your sin and trust Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and give you eternal life. He will receive you and give you a love for the truth that will guide and protect you until He takes you home to be with Him. In either case make a commitment to daily read the Bible. The best versions for your growth and edification are the King James Version or the New King James Version.
